THE TOWN OF TERLIZZI
Terlizzi from the darkness of the origins to the brightness of XVIII century.
Terlizzi rose under the push of barbaric invasions around the V century DC. In that period Terlizzi was involved in many battles, sacks and polical overturnings. The village was for a long time under the pressure of the feudal system introduced in Puglia by the Normans. After centuries of uninterrupted vicissitudes, also due to the terrible calamities that lasted for all the second half of ‘600, finally a small opening of light in the darkness of that age. At the beginning of XVIII th century Terlizzi rose up again. This period was called “The Golden Age” of Terlizzi’s history. Terlizzi passed under the Spanish conquerors and thanks to a new political method the feudal system was pulled down. A well-being period began for Terlizzi and spread out to all the social classes. High economical growth and wealthy life was revealed from a remarkable urban architecture expansion. The town-walls of the city were pulled down, the ditchs were filled up, new roads were drawn and new palaces built. Telizzi completely lost its medieval look and became a modern town.
